 CIS (Construct Industry Scheme)

As of August 1999 it has become law that every tradesperson in the construction industry must hold a valid CIS card.

This is a requirement enforced by the Health and Safety Executive.

Having obtained a CIS card, you are effectively a self-employed sub-contractor. As such, you can claim expenses incurred by yourself relating to work, travel, protective clothing, laundry, and tools etc.

How do I get one?

You can only obtain one of these cards once you arrive in the UK. You will need to take the following with you to your nearest Inland Revenue office:
• I.D.
• 2 x passport photos
• Proof of address (ideally a utility bill)
• National Insurance (NI) number or proof of an appointment to obtain a NI number
• If you do not have a permanent NI number you will be issued with a temporary CIS card, which will be valid for 3 months. Upon receipt of your NI number you will be issued with a permanent CIS card.
